Bobby Lerma is a 1975 graduate of St. Joseph Academy in Brownville; he attended Texas Southmost Collgege from 1975 to 1977 and then received his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics from Texas A & I University, Kingsville, in 1979; he received his J.D. from South Texas College of Law in 1984. While at South Texas, he interned at the Harris County District Attorney's Office; From 1984 until 1991, he was partnership with his father, the late Judge D.J. Lerma in the firm of Lerma and Lerma. Since 1991, he has been in private practice in Brownsville and the South Texas area. He is licensed by the State Bar of Texas and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas; he is currently and member of the Board and Past President of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, an association of the premier criminal defense lawyers in Texas and the premier criminal defense lawyer's association in the United States; he is a member of the National DUI College; he is a Past President of the Cameron County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association; he was appointed by Governor Rick Perry to the Governor's Criminal Justice Advisory Council in 2005 and currently serves on that council; he previously was appointed by Governor William Clements to the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission; he has served on the Criminal Justice Section Council of the State Bar of Texas; Bobby is a frequent lecturer at continuing legal education seminars throughout Texas and has spoken at CLE seminars in Utah, Cayman Islands, Dominican Reupublic, Costa Rica and Aruba.
